Job summary

Steuben County is seeking a Building Commissioner to lead the Building Department, supervise staff, enforce building codes, and oversee permitting and inspections. The role requires strong knowledge of state and county codes and effective public communication.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or HSE with minimum of three years related experience.
• Associates or Bachelor's degree in building construction or related area preferred.
• Commercial Building Certification within one year of employment and ability to maintain certification.
• ICC Building Official certification within one year of employment.
• Thorough knowledge of State and County building codes and ordinances and related trades.

Responsibilities

• Supervises and directs assigned personnel, including hiring decisions, training, and evaluations.
• Enforces County and State building codes and ordinances; initiates enforcement actions and testifies when required.
• Responds to inquiries and provides information on building codes, permits, and related policies.
• Processes applications for commercial and residential building permits and related licenses.
• Reviews plans for compliance and inspects to determine code compliance.
