Job summary

COUNTY OF CAYUGA seeks a Building Inspector to enforce the NYS Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code and related local ordinances. The role reviews plans, inspects structures under construction or repair, and issues permits and occupancy certificates.

You will explain code requirements to contractors and the public while ensuring safety standards are met across county buildings. Candidates must have prerequisite education/experience and be prepared to complete mandated training.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required with related college credits or experience.

Responsibilities

• Administer and enforce NYS Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code and other codes.
• Review plans and specs submitted with building permit applications for compliance.
• Inspect buildings during construction or repair for compliance with codes and permits.
• Issue building permits and certificates of occupancy.
• Explain local building codes and zoning requirements to contractors and the public.
• Remove unsafe conditions and coordinate safeguards during construction.
• Inspect existing structures for conformity with safety standards.
• Conduct inspections and investigations; assist in prosecuting violations.
