Responsibilities

  • Provide high-quality, individualized instruction and intervention for grades 9–12 with diverse learning needs.
  • Develop engaging, hands-on learning experiences to promote participation, independence, problem-solving, and confidence.

Uwharrie Charter Academy | High School

Uwharrie Charter Academy is seeking an enthusiastic, collaborative, and student-centered Exceptional Children’s (EC) Teacher to join our high school team. We are looking for an educator who is passionate about helping students with diverse learning needs reach their full potential through hands-on learning, high student engagement, meaningful relationships, and individualized instruction.

Our ideal candidate will be a strong instructional partner who works collaboratively with classroom teachers, families, and support staff to ensure students receive the services and support outlined in their Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).

Position Responsibilities
  • Provide high-quality, individualized instruction and intervention for students in grades 9-12 with diverse learning needs.
  • Develop engaging, hands-on learning experiences that encourage student participation, independence, problem-solving, and confidence.
  • Implement accommodations, modifications, specialized instruction, and instructional strategies aligned with individual student needs and IEP requirements.
  • Develop, implement, monitor, and regularly update Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) in accordance with federal and North Carolina requirements.
  • Establish meaningful, measurable, and attainable student goals based on assessment data and individual learning needs.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation, progress-monitoring data, service records, and IEP paperwork.
  • Monitor student progress toward IEP goals and use data to adjust instruction and interventions.
  • Collaborate closely with general education teachers to provide effective inclusion and differentiated learning opportunities.
  • Participate in grade-level and professional learning team meetings and contribute to collaborative problem-solving.
  • Build positive relationships with students, families, teachers, and other school personnel.
  • Communicate regularly with families regarding student progress, strengths, needs, and areas for continued growth.
  • Participate in IEP meetings and effectively communicate student needs, progress, and recommendations.
  • Support students in developing academic, social-emotional, behavioral, and self-advocacy skills.
  • Use a variety of instructional strategies, technology, manipulatives, projects, and real-world learning experiences to increase student engagement.
  • Maintain a well-organized learning environment that promotes student success and independence.
  • Ensure compliance with school policies, IEP requirements, confidentiality regulations, and applicable state and federal special education requirements.

  • A valid North Carolina teaching license in Exceptional Children/Special Education.
  • Strong knowledge of special education practices, IEP development, accommodations, modifications, and progress monitoring.

  • Experience creating hands-on, interactive, and student-centered learning experiences.
  • Excellent collaboration skills and the ability to work effectively with general education teachers and support staff.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, particularly with IEP documentation, compliance, record-keeping, and deadlines.
  • The ability to establish clear, measurable student goals and use data to monitor and communicate progress.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

  • The ability to build positive relationships and create a classroom environment where every student feels valued, supported, and capable of success.
