Job summary

James Madison University (JMU) is seeking a part-time Exam Accommodations Assistant to support exam accommodations and proctoring. The role runs 9 months (August–May) with a maximum of 1,500 hours per year, typically 29 hours weekly, 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. M–F. Ineligible: current undergrads with access to records.

Requires strong communication and tech troubleshooting. The position is contingent on a background check and includes no benefits. E-Verify participation is required.

  • Communicate with faculty to obtain materials and resolve testing issues.
  • Prepare testing rooms, materials, assistive tech, and resources.
  • Collect and return completed exams while preserving confidentiality.
  • Assist with testing technology and troubleshooting during examinations.
  • Maintain documentation of appointments, accommodations, and incidents.
  • Open/close testing spaces and ensure supplies are ready for use.
  • Provide courteous service to students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
  • Support program evaluation and other operational initiatives.

General Information:

The Office of Disability Services (ODS) at James Madison University (JMU) is seeking a talented, motivated person to work as a part-time Exam Accommodations Assistant.
This is a 9-month position that corresponds with the JMU fall and spring semesters: August through May. This posting is for a part-time wage position with no benefits. This position is limited to a maximum of 1,500 hours per year (May 1 to April 30), with an average of 29 hours per week.
The regular shift is six to eight hours per day, Monday – Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. with alternate hours during Final Exam Week (December and May).
Due to the access this position has to undergraduate records, current JMU Undergraduate students are not eligible for this position.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Under the supervision of the ODS Assistant Director, Exam & Notetaking Accommodations, the Exam Accommodations Assistant will support exam accommodations and proctoring efforts.
More specifically, the Exam Accommodations Assistant will:

  • Administer accommodated examinations in accordance with university, departmental, and testing center policies while maintaining academic integrity and a secure testing environment.
  • Check students into and out of the testing center, and ensure approved testing accommodations are implemented accurately and consistently.
  • Monitor testing spaces to maintain a quiet, distraction-reduced environment and provide routine supervision of students during examinations.
  • Respond to routine student questions and address testing concerns during exam appointments, referring complex situations, policy questions, or unusual circumstances to the Team Lead, Coordinator, or Assistant Director as appropriate.
  • Communicate professionally with faculty to obtain testing materials, clarify routine exam instructions, coordinate the return of completed exams, and resolve routine testing issues.
  • Prepare testing rooms and exam materials before appointments, ensuring all required testing materials, assistive technology, and approved resources are available.
  • Collect completed exams and return testing materials using the faculty member's designated return method while maintaining exam security and confidentiality.
  • Assist students with approved testing technology and basic technical troubleshooting during examinations, referring unresolved issues to appropriate staff.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of testing appointments, incidents, accommodation implementation, and other required records.
  • Assist with opening and closing testing center procedures, maintaining testing materials and supplies, and ensuring testing spaces remain organized and ready for use.
  • Provide courteous and professional customer service to students, faculty, staff, and visitors while representing the Office of Disability Services.
  • Support program evaluation, assessment activities, and other operational initiatives as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
