Job summary

The University of Kansas Health System is currently seeking a Specimen Processing Technician for the Bell Hospital site in Kansas City. This evening, full-time position involves managing incoming specimens, releasing orders from HIS, and preparing samples for the automation line.

Responsibilities include ensuring correct patient identification, proper container types, and handling of specimens, with experience in pre-analytical processes and microbiology workflows.

Qualifications

• High School diploma required.
• Phlebotomy training preferred.
• DOT and IATA certification within 180 days if required by position.

Responsibilities

• Creates Registration encounters, releases orders out of HIS when indicated; receives samples in LIS; prints barcode labels and affixes labels to specimens.
• Completes order entry functions or paperwork as required; ensures proper container type, centrifugation, specimen sterility, and transport conditions.
• Ensures positive patient identification, correct specimen collection and handling/transport; prioritizes based on clinical urgency.
• Performs specimen processing duties including aliquoting urine and body fluids; stores patient samples appropriately.
• Uses sterile techniques in Microbiology for culture media handling; performs sterile aliquoting, sonification and tissue grinding.
