Job summary

ArtCenter College of Design is seeking an experienced Part Time Shop Instructor II on the second shift for a 9‑month academic year at the Pasadena campus. The instructor extends classroom education by guiding students through fabrication, craftsmanship, and problem solving, and assists in operations beyond design.

The role requires 3–5 years of model shop experience with woodworking and metalworking, plus strong interpersonal and presentation skills. The schedule is 2:00 p.m.

Qualifications

  • Technical school training and 3–5 years of experience using model shop tools in woodworking, metalworking, fabrication.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for working with students and peers.
  • Proficient in speaking and performing tool operations in front of large groups.
  • Broad knowledge of woodworking, metalsmithing, CNC milling, rapid prototyping, plastics, and mold making.
  • Proficient experience with materials such as wood, foam, glues, metals, and plastics.
  • Provide extensive safety demonstrations of shop machines, equipment, tools, and processes.
  • Knowledge of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) compliance requirements and hazardous chemicals.
  • Self-starter, able to complete tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Able to work in a multi-ethnic environment with students, faculty, and staff.
  • Available to work weeknights and some weekends.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee shop operations including safety, standards, and equipment use.
  • Provide advanced guidance on projects, design, materials, techniques, equipment, and procedures.
  • Mentor students one‑on‑one on safety and project execution.
  • Deliver shop demos and workshops each term, focusing on proper tool operations and safety.
  • Coach and mentor Shop Instructor I positions with supervisor support.
  • Assist with unloading and stocking and other related duties as assigned.
