Job summary

Mercy House in Buena Park, CA is seeking a Part Time, Non-Exempt Shelter Specialist to support the Emergency Shelter Program during evening and weekend shifts. The role pays $21.00 per hour and involves shelter setup, guest services, and neighborhood patrols.

You will maintain a clean, safe, and trauma-informed environment, assist guests with housing progress, and help with program activities as needed. Spanish language skills are a plus.

Qualifications

• Experience providing client-focused, trauma-informed, and housing-focused shelter services.
• Ability to perform crisis intervention as needed.
• Ability to work with a diverse population; plan, organize, prioritize duties; communicate clearly in writing and verbally; maintain a professional, safe environment.
• Dependability, responsibility, and effective, respectful communication.
• Spanish language skills are of significant value.

Responsibilities

• Assist in the implementation of shelter activities to ensure quality, guest-focused, and trauma-informed delivery of services.
• Encourage and discuss progress toward housing with shelter guests.
• Assist with shelter setup and maintenance.
• Maintain cleanliness and safety of the facility, including emptying trash cans and cleaning up spills.
• Receive and verify orders from vendors; complete tally sheets.
• Post and update signs and service calendars.
• Set up and monitor audio equipment.
• Organize supplies and facility needs.
• Conduct neighborhood patrols to minimize impact on the surrounding community.
• Assist with guest services and program activities as needed.
• Complete ad hoc projects as assigned by Supervisor.
