Job summary

The Salvation Army Austin Corps is seeking a part-time cook to plan, prepare, and serve nutritious meals for 50–100 participants, Monday through Thursday. You will ensure food safety, assist with menu planning, and support program events in a welcoming environment.

Requires a high school diploma or equivalent and at least one year of relevant food service experience; background checks are required. This site-based role does not permit remote work.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • At least one year of relevant food service, cooking, or meal preparation experience required.
  • Must pass background checks.
  • Knowledge of food preparation, food safety, sanitation, and proper food handling and storage.
  • Ability to prepare meals in quantity, follow menus and dietary instructions, and organize work to meet meal service timelines.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills when working with participants, staff, volunteers, and guests.
  • Dependable and able to work independently and as part of a team.

Responsibilities

  • Meal Preparation & Food Safety: Prepare meals and safely handle, store, and serve food following safety standards.
  • Meal Service: Provide weekday evening meal service to participants in a welcoming, respectful, and dignified manner.
  • Kitchen & Dining Sanitation: Clean and sanitize dishes, utensils, cookware, serving equipment, kitchen equipment, and dining areas.
  • Meal Planning & Food Utilization: Assist with meal planning and use donated and purchased food to meet program needs and reduce waste.
  • Special Events, Volunteers & Program Support: Assist with food prep, cooking, and meal service for events; guide volunteers.
