Job summary

UChicago Medicine’s Comer Children’s Hospital seeks a Lactation Consultant to join the perinatal team. The role blends clinical care, education, and consultation to support lactation and breastfeeding for mothers and babies.

The position is part-time (.60 FTE), evening shift (11:00am–11:00pm) and onsite within Labor & Delivery. Requires Illinois RN license, BSN, 3 years pediatric/OB nursing, and 1+ year lactation experience; IBCLC certification preferred.

Qualifications

• Active Registered Professional Nurse licensure in Illinois.
• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree required.
• Three years of clinical nursing experience in either Pediatric or Obstetrics in a tertiary center or large community center.
• One or more years' of Lactation Consultant experience.

Responsibilities

• Consult with physicians, pharmacists, and other appropriate individuals to serve as a direct resource to breastfeeding mothers and babies.
• Function as Lactation Consultant in area(s) of expertise, collaborating with the mother, primary nurse and physician.
• Assist the primary nurse to formulate a nursing care plan for establishment of lactation and breastfeeding.
• Collaborate with all health care team members to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate lactation and breastfeeding problems and treatment options.
• Develop, evaluate and revise policies and procedures related to lactation and breastfeeding.
• Monitor hospital practices which promote or impede lactation and breastfeeding.
• Respond to information requests concerning lactation from outside the medical center.
• Participate in evaluation, acquisition, maintenance, repair, rental, sale, and instruction in lactation products.
• Generate Quality Improvement statements and evaluate goals in lactation and breastfeeding.
• Collaborate with OB/Ped Leadership in program development.
