Job summary

University of California - Los Angeles (UCLA) seeks an HVAC Assistant to perform routine and semi-skilled tasks across campus facilities under supervision of journey-level craftspeople. You will assist journeypersons, operate tools, and maintain logs while ensuring safety practices and quality workmanship.

Responsibilities include supporting service engineers, repairing and installing basic HVAC components, reading blueprints, and adhering to union guidelines.

Qualifications

• General knowledge, practice and procedures of HVAC trade sufficient to provide routine assistance to journeypersons.
• Ability to perform routine and semi-skilled tasks assisting Service Engineers and Steam Operating Engineers; make minor repairs/installations, or perform preventive maintenance on a variety of University equipment/systems.
• Working knowledge of various hand tools, power equipment and supplies of the HVAC trade; standard safe work practices, equipment, and methods.
• Skill in basic mathematical calculations; reading standard English text; writing reports with correct grammar and spelling.
• Ability to stand, crawl, walk and stoop; lift up to 50 lbs; work indoors/outdoors, in varying temperatures.
• Ability to work independently or as part of a crew; follow assignments with minimal direction.
• Ability to establish cooperative working relationships with coworkers and staff; communicate effectively.
• Ability to observe safety practices; read blueprints and technical manuals.
• Ability to work overtime, weekends, and various shifts; be punctual and productive.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine and semi-skilled HVAC tasks independently or with a crew; assist journeypersons with installations and preventive maintenance.
• Operate and maintain a variety of power and hand tools; transport materials and keep work sites clean.
• Maintain logs of completed tasks and ensure safety practices are followed on the job site.
