Job summary

Smith College in Northampton, MA is seeking a Facilities Custodian to provide a safe, clean environment for daily operations and events. The role includes a wide range of cleaning tasks across offices, classrooms and labs, with an evening shift from Monday to Friday, 3:30pm to 11:30pm.

Responsibilities include floor care, rest room upkeep, light maintenance, safety inspections, and event support. A high school diploma and custodial experience are preferred; eligible candidates must meet safety

Responsibilities

• Dry mop, wet mop, buff, strip and refinish floors.
• Clean spaces including offices, classrooms, labs and storage.
• Vacuum carpets and walk-off mats.
• Remove leaves, snow, and debris from entrances.
• Respond to floods, spills, and non-hazardous cleanup events.
• Replace light bulbs, maintain humidifiers and fountains.
• Inspect eye wash stations, showers, and fire extinguishers per schedule.
• Report maintenance needs to supervisor or coordinator.
• Conduct daily safety inspections and report findings.
• Maintain positive relations with the college community.
• Assist with events and other activities as required.
• Clean stairwells and remove trash/recycle from buildings.
• Follow cleaning frequency schedules and perform related duties.

PRIMARY FUNCTION(S):

To provide a safe and sanitary environment with other necessary support for routine and special activities required of Facilities Management building services.

Work shift is M-F, 3:30pm-11:30pm.

DUTIES:

• Clean rest rooms: toilets, urinals, mirrors, sinks, windows and glass, walls, floors, fixtures, restock paper goods, soap and re-fill sani-machines.
• Dry mop, wet mop, buff, strip and refinish floors.
• Clean all spaces within assigned areas (i.e., offices, classrooms, labs, storage areas, corridors, custodial closets, etc.)
• Vacuum carpets, walk-off mats and runners in all assigned areas.
• Remove leaves, snow and debris from all entrances of assigned areas.
• Perform emergency clean-up of floods, spills and breakage within the building, excluding hazardous materials.
• Perform non-technical tasks as assigned to include, but not limited to changing light bulbs, filling/cleaning humidifiers, cleaning drinking fountains, emptying dehumidifiers, changing screens, opening and closing buildings.
• Check and clean eye wash stations, emergency showers and fire extinguishers according to maintenance schedule.
• Report all necessary maintenance and repair items to the coordinator, supervisor or designee.
• Conduct daily building inspections for possible safety hazards and report findings to the supervisor.
• Maintain positive public relations with all members of the college community.
• Perform tasks for scheduled and unscheduled academic, community events and other activities as required.
• Clean, sweep and mop all stairwells, including assigned floor and one flight up, unless otherwise noted.
• Requires trash removal, recycling and other materials from buildings.
• Must comply with cleaning frequency requirements as scheduled for assigned areas.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• A driver’s license is not required for this position, however, if the employee accepts driving duties, they must complete and comply with all college driving credentialing requirements, which includes a Division of Motor Vehicles background check.
• Must be able to safely lift and carry up to fifty pounds. Must be able to bend, walk, stand, climb stairs and ladders, and safely operate loaded hand trucks and dollies.

Education/Experience:

• High school/vocational diploma, GED equivalent or combination of education and experience.
• Minimum of 1 year (preferred) custodial/housekeeping experience in a service related industry.

Skills:

• Ability to move, deliver and arrange heavy items such as equipment, furniture, fixtures and materials within and between buildings for students, faculty, staff and guests of the college.
• Know the cleaning schedule for all assigned areas and look for ways to improve on that schedule.
• Know and have a basic understanding of the chemicals and processes used in the cleaning schedule; be familiar with chemical safety and Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
• Ability to remove ice and snow from entrances, walkways, ramps, fire escapes, porches and emergency exits attached or leading to buildings, which includes shoveling, scraping and sanding.
• Ability to use good judgment to take appropriate, independent action to carry out the primary functions of the job.
• Must have general computer knowledge.

Compensation

This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement with a progressive wage schedule. The Step 1 hourly rate is $24.52. New hires are typically placed at Step 1.
