This role supports instructors and students in the field through logistical, medical or behavioral issues. This role is crucial to the function of successful field courses.

What does an Evacuation Coordinator do?

Everyday is different! The Evacuation coordinator gets to problem solve, think creatively, and make a big impact on the support that instructors receive in the field.

  • In this job, you get to work through questions like, What trends are we seeing in student behavior this season? What training topics do instructors need? How can we work more effectively to support teams in the field?
  • Carry the evacuation phone 24/7 for 3-5 days and nights in a row.
  • Facilitate the experience of evacuated or expelled students with respect, compassion, and accountability.
  • Coach field staff on risk management documentation and decision making; contribute to NOLS Accepted Field Practices updates and development.
  • Support Three Peaks Ranch and the River Base with evacuation concerns as necessary.
  • Calculate evacuation expenses for students and submit reports to the NOLS finance department.
  • Train field and program staff on all aspects of the Rocky Mountain evacuations (protocols and procedures, documentation and paperwork, challenging phone conversations).
  • Collaborate and work closely together with the Evacuation Manager to create vision and systems for the Evacuation office.
  • Must be an active NOLS field instructor.
In your first 6 months, you will:
  • Coach instructors regarding evacuation, student performance/behavioral issues, and course dynamics.
  • Supervise and coordinate logistics for Rocky Mountain evacuations.
  • Make parent/emergency contact phone calls related to student behavioral issues and/or evacuations. Communicate decision-making and next steps with clarity to emergency contacts.
