Job summary

Foley & Lardner LLP in New York City seeks a Professional Responsibility Counsel to ensure compliance with ethics and regulatory requirements, focusing on conflicts of interest analysis, policy development, and practical guidance for attorneys and staff.

You will guide engagement terms, waivers, and ethics walls, supervise conflicts staff, and collaborate with the Deputy General Counsel on risk-management matters to maintain high ethical standards across the firm.

Qualifications

• J.D. and active license to practice law in the state of residence.
• Minimum two years in legal ethics, conflicts of interest, or professional responsibility.
• Experience with conflicts clearance processes, engagement terms, outside counsel guidelines, waivers, or ethics walls preferred.
• Strong written and oral communication, translating ethics concepts into practical guidance.

Responsibilities

• Assist in developing policies and processes to help firm lawyers comply with ethical and regulatory requirements.
• Serve as a resource for complex conflicts of interest questions on new matters; review conflicts and render determinations.
• Review, negotiate, and approve engagement letters, conflict waivers, requests for proposal, and outside counsel guidelines; advise on ethics walls.
• Supervise and support Conflicts Analysts; deliver training on conflicts, ethics, and professional responsibility topics.
• Advise partners and practice-group leaders on ethics, professional responsibility, and risk-management matters; escalate as needed.
• Elevate potential novel or complex issues; conduct legal research on ethics rules and conflicts-related topics.
• Contribute to shared inboxes and protect highly sensitive information.
