Estimator Responsibilities

  1. Estimate complex and large-scale jobs, including conceptual estimates, negotiated bids, budgets, general conditions, systems studies and comparisons, value engineering, subcontractor relations and staying abreast of industry developments applicable to estimating.
  2. Ensure that the estimating process runs smoothly and efficiently and client expectations are exceeded throughout the duration of the project(s).
  3. Build relationships to understand client, designer and subcontractor needs and expectations.
  4. Analyze drawings, specifications, proposals, and other documentation to prepare time, cost, and labor estimate for projects.
  5. Effectively facilitate collaboration amongst team members.
  6. Effectively communicate with all stakeholders.
  7. Participate in business development activities, presentations and interviews.
  8. Prepare quantity take-offs and apply unit pricing for material and labor to establish a value for the work.
  9. Understand the full scope of the project through document review and asking questions of the design team and owner.
  10. Prepare value engineering and risk analysis.
  11. Prepare qualifications and assumptions for the estimate.
  12. Prepare cost comparisons/reconcile with previous estimates.
  13. Manage Subcontractor solicitation & selection process.
  14. Prepare Exhibit B, and/or scope sheets.
  15. Ensure quality control of bids and estimates.
  16. Prepare an in-house budget and GMP.
  17. Conduct contract performance reviews with Junior Estimators.

Required Experience
  1. BS or MS in Engineering or Construction Management with a minimum of 3 years’ experience in estimating field.
  2. Strong experience in Microsoft Office, especially Excel.
  3. 8+ years’ experience in construction.
  4. 3-5+ years’ experience as construction estimator.
  5. Proficient in specialized estimating software.
  6. Understanding of the influence of market conditions on pricing.
  7. Strong interpersonal and negotiation skills.
  8. Highly developed sense of professional ethics.
  9. Ability to work both on a team as well as independently.
  10. Ability to communicate effectively with tact and diplomacy.
  11. Demonstrated ability to improve processes and create efficiencies.
  12. High attention to detail.
