Job description

Job Summary

The Estimator II’s primary duty is to review plans and specifications, gather quantities, collect subcontract quotes, create the bid in heavy bid, and work with the Project Manager to execute the final bid proposal for the owner on a timely manner.

Responsibilities
  • Review plans and specifications to determine the scope of work required for the project.
  • Review job sites before bidding to determine appropriate estimates.
  • Complete an accurate earthwork takeoff utilizing AGTEK software and perform hand takeoff quantities for various aspects of each project.
  • Calculate quantities (square yard, linear feet, cubic yard, each, etc.) for each project to factor materials needed and material movement.
  • Solicit quotes from subcontractors for bid preparation and final numbers.
  • Keep DBE/MBE requirements in mind when inviting subcontractors to bid.
  • Collect quotes on materials required for the project.
  • Construct the bid by adding activities (work to be completed), crews and equipment, adjusting production rates.
  • Print out bid proposals and deliver them to the owner or general contractor within the required timeframe.
  • Determine results of bids by contacting General Contractors or via the bid runner for publicly awarded jobs.
  • Work with the Project Manager after the job is awarded to manage the project.
  • Perform additional duties or tasks as assigned by Management.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) in Construction Management or Civil Engineering from a four‑year college or university; or a minimum of 3‑5 years of experience bidding and estimating projects; or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Construction Bidding and Project Management software.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.).
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to work with all levels of management, employees, external vendors, and other business associates.
  • Ability to clearly communicate directions and information.
  • Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, clients and/or regulatory agencies.
  • Ability to define problems, collect and document data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of situations and events and respond accordingly.
  • Ability to seek counsel when needed and use a variety of resources.
  • Ability to maintain compliance with all Veit policies and procedures.
Desired Skills and Requirements
  • Working knowledge of AGTEK and HCSS software.
  • No supervisory responsibility.
  • Valid driver’s license and a satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record.
  • Ability to pass a pre‑employment drug screen.
  • Occasional travel and overnight stays to job sites and client meetings (10%).
Physical Demands

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The physical demands are representative of those required to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee is regularly required to stand and/or sit in a stationary position for extended periods of time (50%+ of the time). The employee is regularly required to use a computer/laptop/iPad in an office environment with natural or fluorescent lighting, navigate between office building floors, and on occasion attend off‑site meetings. The employee occasionally may encounter high noise levels, but hearing protection is provided/required.

Work Environment

The work environment is most often an office environment, however job‑site travel is required. The employee frequently works alone and with others, and is frequently exposed to variable work environments, including conditions outside a typical office environment. Occasionally exposed to moving machinery, odors, dust, pressurized equipment, electrical hazards, and environmental conditions such as loud noises, variable weather, rain, snow, wind, cold, and heat.
