Job summary

Veit & Company, Inc. is seeking an Estimator to gather, calculate, and compile data for bid proposals. This role involves collecting supplier and subcontractor quotes, building the bid in HeavyBid, and delivering timely proposals to owners and general contractors.

The ideal candidate will have a construction management or civil engineering background, familiarity with bidding software, and strong communication skills to interact with management and vendors. Occasional travel is expected.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management or Civil Engineering, or 0–2 years bidding/estimating experience or 5 years related field experience.
  • Proficiency with Construction Bidding and Project Management software.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Excellent communication skills with all levels of management, vendors, and clients.
  • Ability to present information to top management, groups, clients, and regulatory agencies.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw conclusions, and use diverse resources.

Responsibilities

  • Gather and calculate quantities (e.g., square yards, linear feet, cubic yards, each) for each project to determine material needs.
  • Solicit quotes from subcontractors for bid preparation.
  • Collect quotes on materials required for the project.
  • Construct the bid by adding activities, crews, and equipment, and adjust production rates.
  • Print and deliver bid proposals to owner or general contractor within required timeframes.
  • Determine bid results by contacting general contractors or reviewing bid notifications.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by management.

Job Description:

The Estimator's primary duty is to gather, calculate, and compile data for use in bid proposal estimates, collects and maintains current, accurate information on prices from suppliers and contractors, and create the bid in HeavyBid under general supervision to execute final bid proposal for owner in a timely manner.

A Day in the Life
  • Gather, calculate quantities (square yard, linear feet, cubic yard, each, etc.) for each project to factor materials needed and material movement, and compile data for use in bid proposal estimates.
  • Solicits quotes from subcontractors for bid preparation and final numbers. Keeps DBE/MBE requirements in mind with subcontractor invitations to bid.
  • Collects quotes on materials required for the project.
  • Constructs the bid by adding activities (work to be completed), crews and equipment, adjusting production rates.
  • Prints out bid proposals to create proposal. Sends/delivers to owner or general contractor of each bid in the time frame required.
  • Determines results of bids by contacting General Contractors or communication from the bid runner for publicly awarded jobs.
  • Other duties or tasks as assigned by Management.
What You'll Need
  • Bachelor's degree (B.A.) in Construction Management or Civil Engineering from four-year college or university; or minimum of 0-2 years' experience bidding and estimating projects or 5 years of related field experience; or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Construction Bidding and Project Management software.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.).
  • Excellent communication skills including the ability to work with all levels of management, employees, external vendors, and other business associates. Must clearly communicate directions and information.
  • Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, clients, and/or regulatory agencies.
  • Ability to define problems, collect and document data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of situations and events and respond accordingly. Ability to seek counsel, when needed and use a variety of resources.
  • Ability to maintain compliance with all Veit policies and procedures.

Work Environment
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those employees may encounter while performing the essential functions of this job. Most often an office environment, however jobsite travel is required. Employee frequently works alone and with others. Frequently exposed to variable work environments, including unique conditions outside a typical office environment. Occasionally exposed to moving machinery, odors, dust, pressurized equipment. Occasionally exposed to electrical hazards. May be exposed to environmental conditions, loud noises, and variable weather including rain, snow, wind, cold, and heat.

Additional Job Description:

Base Compensation: $65,000 - $81,000

The base salary range may vary depending on geographic location, applicant skills, and prior relevant experience.
