Job summary

Nicholson in Detroit, MI and Chicago, IL is seeking an Estimator on-site to prepare portions of estimates for specialty foundation construction. You will determine scope from plans and specs, attend pre-bid meetings, and work with operations to develop a solid bid.

Ideal candidates have 2–5 years of estimating or project engineering experience, a civil/construction degree, and knowledge of geotechnical work. Proficiency with HCSS Heavy Bid is preferred; travel may be required.

Qualifications

• Undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Construction Engineering or equivalent.
• 2–5 years of estimating, cost control and/or project engineering/management experience on heavy highway or heavy industrial construction projects.
• Knowledge of geotechnical construction is a plus.
• Advanced knowledge of estimating techniques and cost control; ability to interpret computerized cost data.
• HCSS Heavy Bid experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Review proposal specifications and drawings to determine scope of work.
• Attend pre-bid meetings, conduct site visits, interact with operations staff to develop work approach.
• Prepare quantity takeoffs and input data into estimating software (HCSS Heavy Bid).
• Review design options and recommend cost‑effective solutions.
• Work with staff and operations to complete estimates and documentation.
• Manage bid time to ensure accurate and timely preparation of estimate portions.
• Maintain files with price data from suppliers and historical data.
• Organize and detail estimates for review and handover to field personnel.
• Interface with vendors and subcontractors for quotes.
• Ensure estimate accuracy within reasonable bounds.
• Maintain professionalism and ethical behavior when representing Nicholson.
• Travel as required.
