Job summary

Waukegan Steel in the Chicagoland area is seeking an estimator to join the pre-construction team. You will review project documents, develop scope and requirements, and prepare structural steel and misc metals quantity takeoffs and detailed scope notes.

The role supports estimate summaries and pricing for customers on varying projects. Ideal candidates have a BS in Structural or Civil Engineering, a strong interest in steel fabrication, proficiency with blueprint reading, and solid computer

Qualifications

• BS in Structural or Civil Engineering preferred.
• Strong interest in working for a structural steel fabricator/subcontractor.
• Experience with structural steel/misc metals preferred.
• Proficient with architectural/structural blueprint reading.
• Strong computer skills; able to learn new software.

Job description

Waukegan Steel is a structural steel fabricator serving the Chicagoland area. Our team has worked on various projects throughout the city including, Soldier Field, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Navy Pier, Willis Tower, Northwestern Welsh-Ryan Arena, Washington/Wabash CTA Platform, Ravinia Festival, and Lincoln Park Zoo. The estimator role is a key member of our pre-construction team as they review potential projects and prepare bid pricing/proposals for our customers. Tasks will vary from project to project as needed - document review, direct quantity takeoffs, defining scopes of work, solicitation and follow-up for subcontractor/vendor pricing.

This role has strong growth potential as Waukegan Steel revenues continue to increase.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Follow established Waukegan Steel pre-construction group policies and procedures.
• Review project documents and develop strong knowledge of project scope and all requirements.
• Prepare structural steel and misc metals quantity takeoffs.
• Prepare detailed scope of work documentation.
• Support pre-con team as needed with preparation of estimate summaries.

Education and Experience:

• Strong interest in working for a Structural Steel fabricator/subcontractor.
• Strong interest in being part of a pre-construction team focused on estimating work.
• Proficient with architectural/structural blueprint reading.
• Strong computer skills, proficient with learning new software applications.
• Experience with structural steel/misc metals preferred.
• Education: BS Structural or Civil Engineering Preferred
