Job summary

Make the Road New York (MRNY) invites applications for an ESOL/Civics Instructor. The full-time, 40-hour/week bargaining unit position will teach contextualized ESOL and Citizenship prep in Queens and Brooklyn, with a focus on student-centered learning and connections to MRNY services and organizing work.

Ideal candidates are bilingual in Spanish and English with prior Civics/ESOL teaching experience, strong digital skills, and a commitment to social justice and community organizing.

Qualifications

  • Eligible to work in the U.S.
  • Fully bilingual (Spanish and English)
  • Experience teaching Civics and ESOL
  • Strong digital literacy with G-Suite, Microsoft Office, Box, Zoom, and Google Voice
  • Occasional travel to MRNY offices
  • Evenings and weekends required
  • Commitment to collective action and community organizing
  • Experience working in a multi-cultural and multi-ethnic work environment
  • Self-starter with strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • High level of accountability and initiative; team-oriented

Responsibilities

  • Plan ESOL/Civics course outlines and unit/lesson plans.
  • Integrate thematic content and funder-required materials into lessons.
  • Upload course outlines, unit plans, and materials to the G-drive.
  • Develop resources to enhance the teaching curricula with social justice focus.
  • Provide ESOL and Citizenship instruction.
  • Deliver content considering students' levels, pacing, and balance of skills.
  • Use classroom management to improve retention.
  • Reach out to students before classes and provide orientation.
  • Coordinate volunteers for civics classes to support mock interviews.
  • Enter attendance, BEST Plus tests, and progress notes in Salesforce.
  • Meet funder requirements, including PD hours and reporting.
  • Attend mandatory staff meetings and professional development trainings.
