Job summary

Make the Road New York is seeking an ESOL/Civics Instructor for the Adult Literacy Department. This bargaining-unit position will teach contextualized English and Citizenship Prep to adults in Queens and Brooklyn, 40 hours per week, following student-centered methods aligned with MRNY's mission.

The role requires full bilingual Spanish/English, eligibility to work in the U.S., strong digital skills, and willingness to connect students to services and MRNY organizing work.

Qualifications

• Eligible to work in the U.S.
• Fully bilingual Spanish and English REQUIRED
• Experience teaching Civics and ESOL classes
• Strong digital literacy skills with G-Suite, Microsoft Office, Box, Zoom, and Google Voice
• Occasional travel to other MRNY offices required
• Regular evenings and occasional weekends required
• Commitment to collective action and community organizing
• Experience working in a multicultural and multi-ethnic work environment

Responsibilities

• Create ESOL/Civics course outlines and unit/lesson plans and materials
• Integrate thematic content required by funders into lessons
• Upload course outlines, unit plans, and materials to the G-drive
• Research and develop new resources to enhance the teaching curricula
• Provide class instruction in ESOL and Citizenship prep classes
• Deliver content considering levels, pacing, and diverse learning styles
• Employ classroom management strategies to improve retention
• Reach out to students before classes and conduct initial assessments
• Follow up with absent students and document participation
• Coordinate volunteers for civics classes as needed
• Enter attendance and BEST Plus tests; monitor student progress
• Support intake activities and Salesforce updates
