Job summary

Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience handling claims evidenced by career progression within the company or similar organization.
• Ability to work independently with limited direction from a Team Leader.
• Authoritative technical knowledge of claims handling and claims terminologies.
• Superior negotiation skills.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills to deal with claimants, customers, insureds, brokers, attorneys, etc.
• Strong knowledge of the company’s products, services, coverages and policy limits, with a solid understanding of claims best practices.
• Commanding knowledge of applicable state and local laws related to line of business handled.
• Superior customer service skills.

Responsibilities

• Under limited supervision, receives assignments and reviews claim and policy information to provide background for investigation and determine extent of policy obligation.
• Contacts, interviews and obtains statements from insureds, claimants, witnesses, physicians, attorneys, police officers, etc.
• May inspect and appraise damage for property losses or arrange for appraisal.
• Evaluates facts to determine liability and extent of company obligation under policy.
• Prepares reports on investigations, settlements, denials, and evaluations.
• Sets reserves within authority limits and advises team leader on reserve changes.
• Reviews progress and status of claims with Team Leader, discusses remedial actions.
• Prepares and submits to Team Leader unusual or possible exposures.
• Assists Team Leader in improving methods for handling claims.
• Sells claims promptly and equitably? (intended: settles claims promptly and equitably).
• Obtains releases, proofs of loss or compensation agreements and issues drafts for payments.
• Informs claimants or attorneys of claim denials when applicable.
