Job summary

BluePearl Pet Hospital in Northeast Portland, OR is seeking an experienced Veterinary Assistant to join our busy Emergency and Critical Care department. A $2,000 sign-on bonus is offered for APCA Level 2 & 3, with shift differentials for night hours.

The role involves triaging emergencies, diagnostics, ICU care, and client communication. You will provide nursing care, assist with anesthesia, perform phlebotomy, and participate in rounds while ensuring high-quality pet care and compassionate

Qualifications

• Experienced veterinary assistant in emergency/critical care.
• Ability to triage cases and assist DVM with treatment plans.
• Proficient in phlebotomy, diagnostics, and client communication.

Responsibilities

• Provide nursing care to emergency patients according to hospital standards.
• Report patient signalment, problem list and plan during rounds.
• Understand medications, monitor therapeutic responses, and administer meds as prescribed.
• Perform phlebotomy and physical exams with vital signs.
• Assist with anesthesia and monitoring for ASA I/II patients.
• Stay current with RECOVER CPR guidelines and roles as assigned.

BluePearl Pet Hospital is hiring an experienced Veterinary Assistant

to work in our busy Emergency and Critical Care department in Northeast Portland (Hollywood), OR! $2000 sign-on bonus offered for APCA Level 2 & 3 (Senior Veterinary Assistant).

Schedule

Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and every other Saturday 9:30pm-7:30am.

Shift Differentials

Weekday night: $3.50

Weekend night: $5.00

Shift Differentials *based on a 4-hour minimum:

• Mon – Fri: 6pm to 8am = $3.50 Shift Differential
• Sat & Sun: 6pm to 8am = $5.00 Shift Differential
• Sat & Sun: 8am to 6pm = $3.50 Shift Differential

Our Veterinary Assistants triage emergency cases as they come in and assist DVM with crafting and going overestimates as needed. In addition, they perform diagnostics (radiographs, labwork, etc), setting patients up in ICU or Inpatient ward, discharging patients, and handling client communication.

As An Emergency Veterinary Assistant, You Will

• Provide nursing care to patients according to hospital standards of care and core values.
• Report patient signalment, problem list and plan during nursing rounds.
• Understand classification of commonly used medications, associated side effects and appropriately monitors therapeutic response.
• Administer medications via appropriate routes and duration.
• Perform phlebotomy.
• Perform physical exam; accurately counts heart, pulse rate, capillary refill time, mucous membranes, temperature, respiratory rate and effort.
• Possess a working knowledge of anesthesia/monitoring equipment and assist with patients assigned ASA I or II classifications.
• Remain current on R.E.C.O.V.E.R CPR guidelines and demonstrates proficiency in designated role as assigned by attending clinician and/or supervisor.
