Job summary

MedVet Medical & Cancer Centers for Pets in Austin, TX, is seeking an Emergency and Specialty Veterinary Assistant for contingent, as-needed work in our fast-paced ER and specialty services.

You’ll record rounds, triage patients, assist veterinarians, monitor anesthesia, perform in-house labs, and educate clients on home care and medications. A veterinary background is required, with emergency experience preferred, and strong communication skills to support our care teams and clients.

Qualifications

• Prior veterinary experience is required.
• Emergency experience is preferred.
• Proficient in calculations (drugs, CRIs, unit conversions).
• Ability to work in a fast-paced ER setting and adapt quickly.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Record and deliver organized rounds, discuss cases and gather additional information as necessary.
• Evaluating incoming patients and prioritizing based on assessment.
• Partner with patient care team regarding treatment plans, client communication and nursing care concerns.
• Provide client education including home care instructions, medications (indications, adverse reactions) and general wellness updates on hospitalized patients.
• Assist DVM with patient assessment, treatment and procedures.
• Provide monitoring and nursing care to hospitalized patients.
• Induce and monitor general anesthesia and sedation procedures.
• Perform in-house laboratory testing and prepare samples for outside laboratory testing.
