Job summary

Brooklyn Friends School in Downtown Brooklyn seeks a creative, equity-focused Middle School Learning Specialist to join our Student Support Team. This educator will foster a joyful, inclusive, and rigorous learning environment for students in grades 5–8, supporting growth as empathetic, expressive, and socially conscious individuals.

The LS collaborates with the All School Learning Support Coordinator, Middle School Leadership Team, and SST to differentiate instruction, implement metacognitive

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred.
• 3–5 years of relevant experience in a Middle School setting.
• Extensive knowledge of learning differences and strategies therein.
• Experience administering a variety of assessments to track and support student growth.
• Ability to create learning environments addressing individual student needs.
• Ability to plan lessons and unit plans with curriculum design in mind.
• Strong communication skills (oral and written) and collaboration.

Responsibilities

• Support student learning for students with evaluations and academic challenges.
• Differentiate instruction and integrate metacognitive strategies across subjects.
• Summarize and communicate evaluation data to teachers and families.
• Coordinate testing accommodations for middle school assessments.
• Provide academic support through skill-building and curricular teaching.
• Develop individualized Evaluation Summaries or Strategy Letters when appropriate.
• Collaborate to evaluate students and align with IEPs/504s.
• Partner with parents to discuss learning needs and support plans.
• Teach courses focused on cognition and executive function.
• Lead professional development for teachers.
