Job summary

Scientific Protein Laboratories LLC, located just outside Madison in Waunakee, Wisconsin, seeks an Equipment Specialist to manage operation, inspection, maintenance, and repair of critical manufacturing and utility equipment. You will support GMP-compliant operations and work with cross-functional teams to improve reliability.

The role emphasizes preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and calibration, with involvement in boilers, HVAC, and plant utilities.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required; technical training preferred.
  • Minimum 3 years of maintenance or equipment support experience in manufacturing or pharma.
  • Basic knowledge of mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, or HVAC systems.
  • Experience with preventive maintenance, calibration and troubleshooting.
  • Ability to read equipment manuals, schematics, and drawings.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine inspections, startup activities, and operational checks on manufacturing and utility equipment.
  • Monitor equipment performance and identify issues requiring corrective action.
  • Troubleshoot and repair production support and utility equipment within skill level.
  • Conduct preventive maintenance according to schedules and SOPs.
  • Assist with equipment calibration, adjustment, and testing to ensure proper operation.
  • Support maintenance and operation of plant utility systems, including boilers and HVAC.

For over 40 years, SPL specializes in the development and cGMP compliant manufacturing of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs). SPL has an exciting opportunity to join the team as an Equipment Specialist.Under general supervision, our Equipment Specialist is responsible for the operation, inspection, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of manufacturing, utility, and production support equipment. The incumbent assists in ensuring equipment reliability, minimizes downtime, and supports safe and compliant operations within a regulated manufacturing environment. The Equipment Specialist performs routine maintenance activities, responds to equipment issues, and works with senior maintenance personnel on more complex repairs and projects.Responsibilities:Perform routine inspections, startup activities, and operational checks on manufacturing and utility equipment.Monitor equipment performance and identify issues requiring corrective action.Troubleshoot and perform repairs on production support and utility equipment within established skill level.Conduct preventive maintenance activities according to established schedules and procedures.Assist with equipment calibration, adjustment, and testing to ensure proper operation.Support maintenance and operation of plant utility systems, including boilers, HVAC systems, water systems, and related equipment.Assist with troubleshooting and maintenance of process equipment, including freeze dryers and other manufacturing equipment.Perform basic electrical, mechanical, piping, and instrumentation maintenance tasks.Document maintenance activities, repairs, inspections, and equipment performance data accurately.Follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), and safety requirements.Collaborate with Manufacturing, Engineering, Validation, and Maintenance personnel to resolve equipment-related issues.Escalate complex equipment malfunctions to senior technicians or supervisors as needed.Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to enhance equipment reliability and operational efficiency.Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.Job Requirements and QualificationsRequired:This position is open to candidates with a range of relevant experience levels. Candidates meeting the minimum qualifications are encouraged to apply. Final job level and compensation will be determined based on the selected candidate’s education, experience, skills, and overall qualifications.High school diploma or GED required; technical training in Industrial Maintenance, Mechanical Systems, HVAC, Electrical Technology, Instrumentation, or related field preferred.Minimum of 3 years of maintenance or equipment support experience in manufacturing, pharmaceutical, food processing, chemical, or related industrial environment.Basic knowledge of mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, or HVAC systems.Experience performing preventive maintenance, calibration and equipment troubleshooting.Ability to read and interpret equipment manuals, work instructions, schematics, and technical drawings.Working knowledge of boilers, PW/WFI systems, solvent recovery systems, plant peptone concentration system, and other plant utilities.Basic understanding of industrial control systems and instrumentation preferred.Strong problem-solving and organizational skills.Ability to work independently and as part of a team.Preferred:Technical certification in a maintenance-related discipline.Experience supporting utility systems, process equipment, or production support equipment.Familiarity with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).Minimum of 5+ years of maintenance or equipment support experience in manufacturing, pharmaceutical, food processing, chemical, or related industrial environment.Knowledge of GMP and industrial safety practices.WHY JOIN SPL?Our employees are our success!
