Job summary

The Municipality of Anchorage is seeking a skilled automotive technician to service and maintain a municipal fleet of vehicles and equipment. The role supports both preventive and corrective maintenance, including oil changes, tire work, and inspections.

Candidates should have a high school diploma or GED and complete a journeyman mechanic apprenticeship, plus practical automotive repair experience. This is a full-time, on-site position in Anchorage with comprehensive health and retirement

Qualifications

High school diploma or GED or equivalent and completion of an approved journeyman mechanic apprenticeship program.
One year of automotive, construction equipment, transit bus, and truck maintenance experience.

Responsibilities

Service and maintains a variety of vehicles and equipment, including oil changes, fluid level checks, lubrication of moving parts, and battery inspections.
Assists mechanics in repair and maintenance of gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment.
Keeps shop areas clean and disposes of discarded oil and other servicing materials properly.
Uses the maintenance software to document work performed.
Must provide own standard tools of the trade.

Job Information

Open to the general public and any current Municipal employee. This position is represented by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) - Technicians, Local 1547 and is subject to the provisions of the current agreement between the Municipality of Anchorage and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 1547.

Monday - Thursday or Tuesday -Friday, 7:00am - 5:30pm

Employees who are hired or rehired to any position shall be placed at the entrance pay step, and advancement from the entrance step to the maximum step within a pay grade shall be by successive steps.

Example of Duties

Services and maintains a variety of vehicles and equipment such as performing oil changes, fluid level checks, lubrication of moving parts, and checking batteries.
Assists mechanics in the repair and maintenance of a variety of gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles and other pieces of equipment.
Cleans and maintains shop work areas including removal of snow, and debris.
Properly disposes of discarded oil and other servicing related materials.
Dismounts, repairs, performs mounting, balancing and removing/replacing of tires at various locations.
Maintains a harmonious work environment.
Assists in shop cleanup, moving vehicles to/from the shop.
Utilizes the equipment maintenance management software to document work performed.
Must provide own standard tools of the trade.
Performs other duties assigned.

Minimum Qualifications / Substitutions / Preferences

High school diploma, GED, or equivalent and completion of an approved journeyman mechanic apprenticeship program.
High school diploma, GED, or equivalent and one (1) year of automotive, construction equipment, transit bus, and truck maintenance and repair experience.

All Applicants Must Possess And/or Complete

Satisfactory background check which includes criminal, education, and employment history at time of hire.
A valid State of Alaska Driver’s License with satisfactory full driving record at time of hire.

Military Service Interview Preference

Veterans who wish to be considered for interview preference, as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D, must attach to the application a copy of their DD Form 214, DD Form 256, NGB Form 22, or a letter from the US Department of Veterans Affairs, recognizing the person as a veteran. Proof of current service can be shown by submission of a statement of service which, at a minimum, shows the full name, date of birth, Social Security Number, date service began, branch of service, rank, name of command providing the information, and unit of assignment. The statement of service must be on a form or letterhead of the individual’s command organization, and shows the name, signature, title, and contact information of the signer providing the statement of service. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.
