Job summary

The Town of Acton is seeking an experienced Equipment Repair Person to join the Department of Public Works. This full-time role performs skilled mechanical work diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining the town's fleet of vehicles and equipment while supporting Public Works operations and emergency response.

Responsibilities include troubleshooting mechanical and electrical issues, preventive maintenance, repairing gasoline, diesel, hybrid, and electric vehicles, and maintaining repair records.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED with 4 years automotive/mechanical experience.
  • Valid driver's license; CDL Class A with air brake endorsement.
  • Massachusetts Hoisting Licenses 2A and 1D (forklift) and OSHA-10.
  • Equivalent combination of education and work experience accepted.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose, repair, and maintain Town vehicles and equipment.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical and electrical issues.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and inspections.
  • Repair gasoline, diesel, hybrid, and electric vehicles.

Job description

The Town of Acton is seeking an experienced and skilled Equipment Repair Person to join our Department of Public Works. This full-time position performs skilled mechanical work diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining the Town's diverse fleet of vehicles and equipment while also supporting Public Works operations and emergency response.

General Duties and Responsibilities:

The Equipment Repair Person diagnoses, maintains, and repairs Town vehicles and equipment, including cars, police and fire vehicles, pickup and dump trucks, front-end loaders, backhoes, lawn and grounds equipment, and other light and heavy equipment.

  • troubleshooting mechanical and electrical issues
  • performing preventive maintenance and inspections
  • repairing gasoline, diesel, hybrid, and electric vehicles
  • servicing hydraulic and air brake systems
  • repairing engines, suspensions, transmissions, fuel and electrical systems
  • welding and fabrication
  • responding to equipment breakdowns and field repairs
  • maintaining repair and maintenance records
Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or GED and a minimum of four (4) years of experience in automotive mechanics involving mechanical and electrical work on cars, trucks, heavy equipment, gasoline and diesel engines, and hydraulics; or an equivalent combination of relevant education and work experience. A valid driver's license is required. Candidates must possess a CDL Class A with air brake endorsement, Massachusetts Hoisting License Class 2A or greater, Massachusetts Hoisting License Class 1D (forklift), and OSHA-10 certification, or be able to obtain the required licenses and certifications within one (1) year or by the next available testing period, whichever comes first.

Preferred Qualifications:

welding and fabrication experience, OSHA Excavation Competent Person certification, and experience with Public Works operations and construction.

This position requires significant physical activity, including heavy lifting that may exceed 100 pounds, and work in both a mechanical repair shop and outdoor environments. The successful candidate must be available for emergency response, including winter maintenance.

Pay Rate:

Grade A7, starting $31.0219/hr.
