Job summary

The Town of Weston DPW seeks a DPW Mechanic Grade 2 to repair and maintain a range of heavy, medium, and light equipment. The role requires a CDL, Hoisting License within 6 months, and owning your own tools. Overtime is required for emergencies and snow operations.

40 hours per week at $38.01 per hour, with benefits and union considerations. Ability to work with town staff and provide exceptional service is essential.

Qualifications

• Must own tools and be able to operate test and diagnostic equipment.
• Commercial Driver’s License, Class B required.
• Hoisting License required to operate loader, backhoe, sewer-vac, catch basin cleaner and street sweeper.
• Overtime availability for emergencies and sanding/plowing operations.

Responsibilities

• Repair vehicles and equipment per manufacturer specs and manuals using hand and power tools.
• Troubleshoot and diagnose problems in vehicles and equipment.
• Replace major components (engines, transmissions, hydraulic/pneumatic systems) and perform preventative maintenance.
• Perform body work, welding, and painting as needed.
• Transport parts and assist in field repairs; in-town pump station servicing as required.
• Train personnel on procedures and equipment; maintain records.

40hrs p/week benefited, $38.01 p/hr. CDL and Hoisting licenses within 6 months of hire and own tools required upon hire. Incumbent must have own tools and be available for overtime for emergencies and sanding and plowing operations.

Primary Purpose Of The Position

To repair and maintain vehicles and equipment as a member of the Department of Public Works in support of the Town of Weston.

Duties And Responsibilities

• Repair vehicles and equipment in accordance with manufacturers specifications, operations manuals, diagrams and sketches using hand and power tools and precision measuring and testing instruments.
• Trouble shooting, diagnosing and correcting problems with vehicles and equipment
• Remove, repair, and replace major components such as engines, transmissions, front and rear end assemblies, hydraulic systems, pneumatic and hydraulic brake systems and electrical systems.
• Perform preventative maintenance on vehicles and equipment
• Perform body and frame modifications requiring welding and sheet metal fittings
• Perform body work and selected painting
• Pick up, deliver, and unload parts and materials
• Operate snow removal trucks, sanders, and equipment
• Assist and provide support in servicing mechanical components at town pump station, including set up, running and servicing of emergency equipment
• Repair equipment and vehicles in the field and assist in towing the vehicle
• Trains personnel on operating procedures and equipment
• Maintains necessary records in a complete and accurate manner
• Performs work in a safe manner in accordance with department safety guidelines and State and Federal Regulations
• Report unique and unusual situations to the supervisor or designee
• Performs other related work and assists other departments as required or requested
• Provides extraordinary customer service.

Desirable Qualifications

• Demonstrates proficiency in automotive maintenance, hydraulics and welding techniques.
• Must possess own tools
• Demonstrates ability to operate test measurement and diagnostic equipment and personal computers or a willingness to develop those skills within one year.
• Must possess a Commercial Driver’s License, Class B
• Must possess a Hoisting License to operate a loader, backhoe, sewer-vac, catch basin cleaner and street sweeper
• Demonstrates the ability to work continuously under varying weather conditions
• Ability to work overtime as requested or required
• Has a work history that demonstrates a good working attitude and an ability and willingness to work with supervisors and peers without conflict and independently with minimum supervision
• Ability to keep records and make reports
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions
• Ability to read and follow service/repair manuals, also to understand technical specifications established by regulatory agencies.
• Demonstrates proficiency in the safe and effective use of powered and hand tools.

Education And Skills

• High School diploma or equivalent
• Demonstrates the ability to understand and communicate work related information
• Demonstrates basic mathematical skills in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

Physical

• Physically fit to perform heavy manual labor to include ability to lift automotive components up to 200 pounds with assistance and climb into/out of truck bodies.
• Must have vision correctable to 20/20 with good field and depth perception to operate motor vehicles safely and efficiently.
• Demonstrates good hand and finger dexterity to use hand tools and make adjustments on equipment.
