Job description

The City of Friendswood Street & Drainage Department of Public Works is currently accepting applications for an Equipment Operator for the Public Works Department, Utilities Division. This role supports maintenance programs for all public water and sanitary sewer infrastructure within the City of Friendswood. The position involves intermittent supervision of maintenance crews, operating heavy and light equipment such as backhoes, excavators, haul trucks, dump trucks, and jet/vacuum trucks to construct or maintain infrastructure.

Duties

1. Perform utility maintenance duties regularly.
2. Operate heavy equipment as required.
3. Haul crew members, materials, and equipment using light or heavy trucks.
4. Make repairs utilizing various tools and equipment.
5. Address citizen complaints or problems related to city infrastructure in the field.
6. Assist Crew Leaders and the Assistant Superintendent in inspecting work and overseeing preventive maintenance.
7. Follow safety precautions to prevent injuries or accidents.
8. Oversee the safe operation and maintenance of division vehicles and equipment.
9. Provide backup support to Crew Leaders.
10. Perform related duties as assigned, including hands-on leadership.

Requirements

• Three to five years of supervisory or related experience.
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
• Class D Water Distribution License.
• Class 1 Collection License.

Working Conditions

Position involves heavy lifting (>50 pounds), extended sitting, walking, and standing. Exposure to dirt, dust, noise, heat, cold, dampness, odors, fumes, and poor lighting. Requires physical exertion and agility. Most work is outdoors in various weather conditions. The role is Emergency Essential, requiring 24-hour availability during emergencies.
