  • Follows supervisor instructions and works independently or in a team.

Job description

Position Summary

This position is involved in the operation of light and heavy equipment used in support of work operations including maintenance and improvements of stormwater facilities, pipes, culverts, manholes, inlets, curbs, ditches, streams, and channels.

This is a skilled position involving the operation of complex power equipment. The incumbent operates all light and heavy machinery and equipment, including, but not limited to Menzi excavator, ditch diggers, tractors, front end loaders, backhoes, lawn mowers, heavy trucks, including dump-type and garbage trucks. He/she also performs routine maintenance, lubrication, etc. on all equipment used.

This position reports directly to the Utilities Superintendent under the Public Works Director. Work is performed both independently and in a team.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Operates all equipment, including but not limited to Menzi excavator, ditch diggers, tractors, front end loaders, backhoes, lawn mowers, heavy trucks, including bucket truck and garbage truck and street sweeper.
  • Performs stormwater system maintenance.
  • Debris / tree removal from ditches and outfalls.
  • Mows grass with deck mowers and tractor bush hogs.
  • Perform emergency repairs to Town properties after storm events as directed.
  • Operate a town vehicle or pick-up truck.
  • Cleans and fuels equipment and vehicles.
  • Tree and vegetation trimming, removal and debris clearing.
  • Reports problems with equipment or vehicles to Supervisor.
  • Completes daily work logs.
  • Follows orders given by Supervisor.

Minimum Requirements
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Some experience in operating light or heavy equipment
  • Stormwater experience preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Some knowledge of tools used in grounds and building maintenance.
  • Ability to comprehend and carry out oral instructions.
  • Ability to perform manual labor, sometimes under adverse weather conditions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, facility users and residents.
  • Ability to perform work without close supervision at times.
  • Ability to read, write and perform basic math problems.
  • Ability to operate vehicles and trucks
  • Physically able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds unassisted, or more with assistance.
  • Mechanical ability to troubleshoot causes of mechanical failure and determine appropriate corrective action.
  • Ability to participate in, understand and implement appropriate OSHA training.
Work Conditions
  • When handling heavy material and mechanical equipment other personnel are available for assistance.
  • Work requires kneeling, crouching, climbing ladders etc. during various work operations.
  • Exposure to one or more of the following: moving vehicles and objects, sharp edges, electric shock, high work, inclement weather conditions and in some cases slippery working surfaces.
