Job summary

City of Abilene is seeking a skilled Solid Waste Driver to operate refuse collection and recycling vehicles on assigned routes. You will conduct routine vehicle inspections, maintain records, and provide relief driver support as needed.

The role requires a CDL with air brake endorsement, basic manual labor capabilities, and the ability to learn routes and follow safety procedures. Overtime and weekend work may be required.

Qualifications

• Requires CDL with air brake endorsement.
• High school diploma or GED required.
• Ability to learn routes and operate transit/collection equipment.

Responsibilities

• Dump collected trash at designated dump sites/landfill.
• Perform relief driver duties for absent drivers and crew chiefs.
• Operate trash collection or recycling vehicles and other Solid Waste Services equipment.
• Empty front load and open top containers.
• Learn and memorize routes to complete refuse collection.
• Perform basic vehicle inspections and maintenance.
• Follow safety rules and report unsafe conditions.
• Train new Solid Waste employees in safe operation of collection routes.
• Oversee cross-training as needed.
• Complete paperwork and reports related to collection services.
