To operate a variety of machinery and equipment in the performance of a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks in the construction, maintenance and repair of City streets, water and sewer lines and related facilities. This is the full journey level class within the Equipment Operator series. Employees within this class are distinguished from the Equipment Operator I by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned under general supervision. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the II level, or when filled from outside, require directly related work experience.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Essential Functions:
- Operate, maintain and perform minor repairs on a variety of machinery and equipment in the performance of duties including hand and power tools, welder, backhoe, frontend loader, jackhammer, dump truck, chainsaw, brushhog and tractors.
- Participate in street repairs; prepare holes in street surfaces for repair; apply patching material to fill hole.
- Assist in laying bricks and using the tar pot to tack streets; build fences as assigned.
- Trim and remove foliage obstructing traffic signs or signals; cut out weeds growing along cracks in the streets; mow creek area.
- Participate in mixing, pouring and finishing concrete.
- Clear storm drains of refuse and debris.
- Haul asphalt, sand and gravel to work site.
- Clean and maintain order of work areas.
- Repair tire flats in shop area.
- Maintain service and repair records on division machinery and equipment.
Additional Duties:
- Perform related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
- General construction methods and practices.
- Location of various City streets and addresses.
- Techniques for mixing and pouring concrete.
- Operation and maintenance requirements of a variety of machinery and equipment utilized in the performance of job assignments.
- Practices and techniques for repairing and maintaining equipment.
- Standard practices and procedures for assigned division.
Ability to:
- Work independently in the absence of supervision.
- Operate a variety of vehicles and equipment in a safe and effective manner.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Learn the location of various City streets and addresses.
- Learn the techniques for mixing and pouring concrete.
- Operate, maintain and perform minor repairs on a variety of tools, machinery and equipment relevant to work assignments.
- Lay hot mix asphalt.
- Perform the physical requirements of the job.
- Perform work in an undesirable or hazardous equipment including inclement weather, confined spaces and improper illumination.
- Perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled construction and maintenance tasks.
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Experience and Training Guidelines:
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience:
- Three years experience in construction or related field.
- Two years of experience comparable to that of an Equipment Operator II in the City of Gainesville.
Education/Training:
Formal or informal education which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for job performance.
License(s)/Certification(s):
- Possession of a valid driver's license.
- Must have ability to obtain Class A or B CDL within six (6) months of request when requested by supervisor.
