GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB

Under general supervision, operates motor equipment in collecting refuse from city business locations and hauling to transfer station and/or landfill. Uses judgment in performing semi-routine duties following clearly prescribed standard practices and procedures.

POSITION HOURS

6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, with some weekend and on-call hours.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Operates sanitation equipment in order to pick up trash from city business locations; empties two-yard, four-yard, six-yard and eight-yard boxes of refuse onto trucks; utilizes shovel, rake, pitch fork, etc., in cleaning trucks and areas of trash; hauls and dumps refuse at transfer station and/or landfill as required.
  • Receives daily work orders; prepares work schedules; and ensures that all garbage and debris on assigned route is picked up in a timely manner as required.
  • Communicates with supervisor, co-workers, members of the public, etc., in matters relative to garbage collection and disposal.
  • Performs vehicle inspections on a daily basis; checks lights, brakes, oil, tires, etc.; performs preventive maintenance and minor repairs as needed; reports major repair needs to supervisor; ensures that trucks and equipment are in proper and safe working condition.
  • Ensures that safety precautions are practiced in the performance of duties.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

High school education and two years of experience in operating motor equipment, sanitation trucks, etc., or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Must possess a valid S.C. Commercial Driver's License. Must be physically able to perform manual labor required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Physical Requirements:

Must be physically able to operate a variety of types of motor equipment including front-end loader, various types of trucks, etc. Must be physically able to exert up to fifty pounds of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. Physical demands are in excess of sedentary work. Must be able to lift and/or carry weights of approximately one hundred pounds.

Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes in using various types of equipment. Requires the ability to operate motor vehicles.

Manual Dexterity:

Requires the ability to handle a variety of items, control knobs, switches, etc. Must have high levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.

Color Discrimination:

Does not require the ability to differentiate colors and shades of color.

Interpersonal Temperament:

Requires the ability to deal with people beyond receiving instructions. The worker needs to relate to people in situations involving more than receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under minimal stress when confronted with an emergency.

Physical Communication:

Requires the ability to talk and/or hear (talking - expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words; hearing - perceiving nature of sounds by ear.)

Possesses thorough knowledge of the operation, maintenance, adaptabilities, limitations and safety precautions of the equipment to which assignment is made. Has general working knowledge of sanitation department vehicles, equipment, etc., used in the collection and transportation of garbage and debris. Possesses considerable knowledge of safety practices and S.C. Highway Department laws and regulations. Has working knowledge of maintenance procedures of vehicles operated. Is able to perform manual labor and duties requiring good physical condition. Is skilled in the operation of trucks and other automotive equipment under all types of weather conditions. Is able to follow and understand simple oral and written instructions. Has the mechanical aptitude to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment. Is able to maintain control of assigned activities through the application of good human relations techniques. Is able to analyze problems that arise on the job and recommend solutions. Is able to use judgement and discretion in carrying out assigned activities. Is able to communicate effectively with co-workers, supervisors, members of the public, etc. Is able to operate motor equipment safely and for extended periods of time.

Maintains high standards of accuracy in exercising duties and responsibilities. Exercises immediate remedial action to correct any quality deficiencies that occur in areas of responsibility. Maintains high quality communication and interacts with all City departments and divisions, co-workers and the general public.

Maintains equipment and machinery operated in safe and proper working condition, making minor repairs as needed and reporting major repairs to supervisor.
