Job summary

The City of Copperas Cove is seeking a Solid Waste Collector to manage the collection and disposal of solid waste and recyclables. The ideal candidate will operate heavy equipment, complete designated routes efficiently, and perform maintenance on collection vehicles. This role requires a high school diploma and related experience, along with a commitment to safety and environmental regulations.

GENERAL PURPOSE:

Collects and disposes solid waste and recyclable materials in accordance with local, state and federal rules and regulations and performs special duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:

Receives direct supervision from the Supervisor Solid Waste - Operations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Collects and disposes solid waste and recyclable materials by operating a garbage truck or light equipment. Completes assigned routes in a timely fashion. Drives waste to the landfill, baling cardboard and delivering recyclables to vendors. Performs special duties as assigned by writing tickets, commercial services include delivering and servicing roll off containers. Maintains grounds at transfer station. Performs related duties and responsibilities as required, performs preventative maintenance checks on vehicles, picks up litter and debris around the facility. Regular and timely attendance is an essential job function.

PERIPHERAL DUTIES:

May serve as a member of various employee committees. Other Duties as assigned.

DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Graduation from high school or equivalent; One to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Operate heavy equipment, garbage truck or light equipment. Valid State CDL Driver's License, or ability to obtain one prior to employment.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of applicable policies, laws, and regulations affecting solid waste activities; Knowledge of city geography and street layout; Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations; Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos; Ability to write simple correspondence and complete reports as required; Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization; Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's; Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:

Personal computer including Microsoft Office software; garbage truck; heavy and light equipment; telephone; calculator; radio; fax and copy machine.
