Job summary

The City of Norfolk is seeking an Equipment Operator III to perform a range of grounds maintenance and heavy equipment tasks in the coastal Virginia community. You will operate surf rakes, backhoes, loaders, dump trucks, mowers, tractors, forklifts, and related machinery while maintaining landscapes and turf for beaches and city rights‑of‑ways.

Responsibilities include safety checks, routine maintenance, site cleanup, and assisting with grading and planting projects.

Qualifications

• Two years of experience as an Equipment Operator or successful completion of a City apprenticeship program.
• Valid driver's license required.
• Preferred CDL Class B with Air Brakes Endorsement within 6 months of employment.
• CPR Certification preferred.

Responsibilities

• Operates heavy equipment including Surf Rakes, backhoes, front end loaders, dump trucks, and maintainers.
• Maintains grounds and right of ways: plants, trees, grass, mulch, litter removal, and turf installation.
• Performs safety checks and minor preventative maintenance on equipment.

The Equipment Operator III will be responsible for operating various equipment to include surf rakes, backhoes, front end loaders, dump trucks, and maintainers. The Equipment Operator III also operates mowers, tractors, dump trucks, fork lifts, and other motorized equipment used in grounds maintenance operations.

Operates heavy equipment to include Surf Rakes (clean beaches), backhoes, front end loaders, dump trucks, and maintainers. This position also operates mowers, tractors, dump trucks, forklifts, and other motorized equipment in grounds maintenance operations.

Maintains grounds and right of ways by collecting and delivering trash containers, mowing grass, raking leaves, digging holes, planting, pruning and maintaining trees and flower beds, mixing and applying chemicals, loading and applying mulch, weed eating, trimming, performing general care of landscape, grading athletic fields for game play, installing and maintaining turf, removing trees, grinding tree stumps, identifying plants and trees, cleaning up job sites, hauling topsoil, grading, removing snow, aerating lawns, cutting grass, trimming trees, removing dead limbs, removing storm damage, cutting back weeds, picking up and removing litter, refuse and debris from vacant lots.

Performs safety checks and minor preventative maintenance on equipment, including but not limited to, checking fluids, changing blades and daily inspections to ensure equipment is safe to operate.

Other duties as assigned.

Work requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational, technical, or office processes. Level of knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency.

Required:

• Two years of experience as an Equipment Operator or successful completion of a City apprenticeship program.

• Valid driver's license required.
• Preferred License(s) and/or Certification(s): CDL Class B with Air Brakes Endorsement within 6 months of employment.
• Preferred CPR Certification.
