Job summary

The City of Kingsport is seeking a skilled Equipment Operator to operate a range of municipal equipment across multiple divisions. You will perform manual labor, conduct inspections, and help keep vehicles in safe working order.

Responsibilities include minor maintenance, record-keeping, and assisting the Crew Leader. You will participate in trainings, support emergency operations, and contribute to a safe, efficient work environment in all weather conditions.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Experience equivalent to one year full-time work operating equipment preferred.
  • Valid CDL Class A license (and tanker endorsements when assigned to Utilities) required and must be maintained.

Responsibilities

  • Operate a variety of equipment (pump truck, bucket truck, asphalt distributor truck, excavators, loaders, bulldozer, grader).
  • Perform manual labor tasks and inspections; keep equipment clean and safe.
  • Report major repairs and perform minor maintenance.
  • Maintain records of tasks; assist Crew Leader and training.
  • Attend safety trainings and comply with regulations; assist in emergency operations.

Job description

Performs skilled and semi-skilled work in the operation of various equipment in multiple divisions throughout the City of Kingsport.

  • Operates a variety of equipment, such as: pump truck, bucket truck, asphalt distributor truck, asphalt paving machine, backhoe, track excavator, wheel/track loader, bulldozer, road grader, etc;
  • Performs a variety of manual labor tasks;
  • Ensures all tasks are completed in a safe and efficient manner;
  • Operates hand tools appropriate to the assigned areas;
  • Performs appropriate inspections and keeps equipment and vehicles clean and in safe working order;
  • Performs minor maintenance/repairs, reports major repairs;
  • Checks and maintains fluid levels;
  • Occasionally fills in for the Crew Leader when needed;
  • Assist in training and mentoring other employees on safe and efficient equipment operation techniques;
  • Keeps appropriate records of tasks performed;
  • Performs other duties when not operating equipment;
  • Attend training as needed to ensure compliance with safety and regulatory requirements, as well as achieve/maintain required certifications;
  • Assist in emergency operations as needed;
  • Additional duties as assigned.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in operating designated equipment;
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and appropriate safety precautions for operating equipment;
  • Knowledge/skill of the principles, practices, methods, and materials used for assigned work;
  • Ability to follow routes/instructions and make independent judgments;
  • Skill in performing vigorous manual labor under adverse weather conditions;
  • Skill in communicating tactfully and courteously with the public;
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions;
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with co-workers, other City staff, and the public.
  • High school graduate or high school equivalent;
  • Experience equivalent to one year full-time work in operating the designated or similar equipment preferred;
  • Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL/Class A) when assigned to Utilities, including tanker endorsements (must maintain throughout employment).
