Job summary

The City of Kingsville seeks an experienced equipment operator to support water and wastewater system operations and related street, alley, and drainage maintenance. You will operate excavators, graders, loaders, dump trucks, back hoes, rollers, tractors and mowers, and perform routine servicing of this equipment.

You must be able to follow written and oral instructions, complete handwritten reports, and work safely in trenches and confined spaces. After-hours standby for emergencies is required.

Qualifications

  • Three (3) years experience in operating light to heavy equipment.
  • Possess a Commercial Driver’s License Class A or B within 3 months.
  • Must obtain Wastewater Level Class I certification within six months and Class II within one year.
  • High school diploma or equivalent and valid Texas driver’s license.

Responsibilities

  • Operate vehicles and equipment such as excavators, graders, loaders, dump trucks, back hoes, rollers, tractors and mowers.
  • Perform cleaning, preventive maintenance and servicing of equipment.
  • Follow oral and written instructions; write reports by hand; use radios and mobile phones.
  • Work in trenches and confined spaces; perform minor carpentry, painting and concrete work.
  • Standby for after-hours emergency work as required.

Job description

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Definition: Under general supervision, operates heavy motorized equipment used in water and wastewater systems. Participates in street, alley, and drainage maintenance, landfill operations, repair and construction, and any other related work as needed.

Essential Job Functions:
  • Operates vehicles and equipment such as excavators, graders, loaders, dump trucks, back hoes, rollers, tractors, mowers and various types of equipment.
  • Responsible for the cleaning, washing, preventive maintenance and servicing of equipment.
  • Uses good judgment to work safely and use equipment properly, wears protective gear when needed.
  • Serves on stand by crew for after-hours emergency work as required.
  • Must be able to follow both oral and written instructions, must write reports by hand. Use of radios and mobile phones.
  • Work in trenches and confined spaces, minor carpentry work, painting and concrete work.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES:

Performs additional duties as assigned. May be required to supervise one- or two-man crews.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of city, state, federal regulations pertaining to the operation of equipment in public spaces. Proper techniques and uses of a variety of hand tools and power tools.
  • Knowledge of mechanical, proper care and skillful/safe operation of heavy equipment, ex. hand saws, skill saws, drill press, vibrators, bolt cutters, picks, axes, air compressors, jack hammers, cutting torch and various weight hammers.
  • Ability to operate a variety of motorized equipment.
  • Ability to follow both oral and written instructions.
  • Basic math, the ability to determine simple things and reports.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Three (3) years experience in the operation of light, medium to heavy equipment and posses a mechanical aptitude to make minor repairs and adjustments.
  • Ability to posses a Commercial Driver’s License Class A or B within 3 months of employment.
  • Must be able to obtain Wastewater Level Class I certification of competency as mandated by TCEQ within six months of employment.
  • Must be able to obtain Wastewater Level Class II certification of competency as mandated by TCEQ within (1) year of employment
Conditions of Employment:

  • Possession of Valid Texas Driver’s License
  • Satisfactory Driving Record
  • Proof of Citizenship and /or eligibility to work in the U.S. legally

  • Background investigation
  • All City employees are required in the course and scope of their employment to provide services for the benefit of the general public during emergency situations that threaten the safety of Kingsville citizens. City employees must be able to work immediately before, during, and/or immediately after an emergency in accordance with the City of Kingsville Emergency Services Policy No. 12.14 effective July 9, 2001.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must be able to lift and carry up to 100 pounds; push, pull and/or drag up to 150 pounds of equipment and/or materials; climbs, crawls, kneels, squats, stoops, stands, sits, and bends when driving or maintaining equipment; hear and see clearly when working around equipment or in traffic. Works outdoors in extreme temperatures and inclement weather with some exposure to dust, fumes, noise, mechanical, electrical, and chemical hazards while using proper safety precautions.
