EQUIPMENT OPERATOR II (REFUSE COLLECTION)

An Overview

An Equipment Operator II operates one or more types of heavy automotive equipment. This role requires significant skill in manipulating heavy motor equipment, with a focus on safety to prevent accidents. Assignments are detailed by supervisors, following standard procedures, with periodic inspections for safety and efficiency. This class differs from Equipment Operator I by requiring higher skill levels and handling more expensive equipment. Incumbents often lead Laborers and Refuse Collectors.

The Opportunity

• Operates refuse collection trucks and other light and heavy motor equipment; completes daily reports.
• Operates a knuckle-boom loader for loading heavy materials.
• Ensures safety rules, including proper attire and backing procedures, are followed.
• Performs daily vehicle inspections and safety checks.
• Occasionally operates trucks for sanding icy streets and snow removal.
• Assists in special projects, civic associations, and community events.
• Responds to citizen inquiries and complaints regarding refuse and recycling services.
• Maintains equipment cleanliness and reports malfunctions.
• Performs additional duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

• High School Diploma or GED, or equivalent experience and training.
• At least two (2) years of experience operating related equipment in solid waste management.
• Demonstrated supervisory skills.
• Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with all applicable endorsements.
• Thorough knowledge of traffic safety rules and regulations.
• Ability to read and understand technical materials and work orders.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions, perform minor repairs, and work under all weather conditions.

Note: Resource Recovery operates 7 days a week. Scheduled hours may include weekends. Typical hours are 6:30 am – 3:00 pm (October–April) and 5:30 am – 2:00 pm (May–September).
