Job summary

Bexar County is seeking an Equipment Operator II at a pay range of $19.99–$23.49 per hour for full-time work. The role covers operating light to medium road construction equipment, performing asphalt application with mechanized tools, and conducting routine maintenance on equipment.

Qualifications include a high school diploma or GED with two years of relevant experience, a valid Texas Class B CDL, and the ability to work overtime and on-call.

• Ability to perform minor mechanical repairs and use independent judgment.
• Follow verbal and written instructions including construction plans; establish and maintain working relationships.
• Must have a valid Texas Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
• Must pass background check, pre-employment physical and drug screen.
• May work over 40 hours and be on-call 24 hours.

Responsibilities

• Prepare and apply asphalt with mechanized and non‑mechanized equipment.
• Perform service checks, maintenance and minor repairs on road equipment.

• Complete administrative logs, forms and reports and train less experienced employees.
• Possibly supervise other employees on road construction and maintenance tasks.

Job Title

Equipment Operator II - C Pay Rate Min to Mid Range $19.99 - $23.49 Time Type Full time

Duties and Responsibilities

Operate various types of equipment including, but not limited to, mowers, shredders, fork lifts, sweepers, rollers, loaders, fuel trucks, and dump trucks used in construction and maintenance of roadways, drainage structures and parking facilities. Prepare and apply asphalt using both mechanized and non‑mechanized equipment. Complete service checks, maintenance and minor repairs of various pieces of road equipment. Perform various safety‑related procedures at construction sites, including installation of various types of traffic control devices and directing traffic. Complete administrative logs, forms and reports. Assist in providing on‑the‑job training to less experienced and lower‑level employees. May exercise technical supervision over employees in the performance of road construction and maintenance. Perform related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

• Graduation from high school or GED certificate, and two (2) years’ experience in operating light to medium road construction equipment or pavement marking equipment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Knowledge of mechanical operations of road equipment; knowledge of operation and maintenance of equipment used in road construction, maintenance, striping and pavement marking.
• Skill in the operation of hand tools; knowledge of safety standards and practices; skill in performing mathematical calculations.
• Ability to perform minor mechanical repairs; ability to utilize independent judgment.
• Ability to follow verbal and written instructions including construction plans; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co‑workers, County employees, and the general public.
• Must have a valid Texas Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
• Must secure and maintain a favorable background investigation and clearance.
• Must secure and maintain a pre‑employment physical and a pre‑employment drug screen test.
• May be required to work more than 40 hours during the workweek.
• Required to be on‑call 24 hours a day.

• Large Sweeper (Street)
• Oil Distributor (under 2000 gallons)
• Wheel Loader (less than 3 cubic yards)
• Tractor Mowers (5-7 gang, slope, Batwing and Boom)
• Herbicide Truck
• Temporary assignment to higher or lower level equipment may occur when necessary.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands

• Constantly working in outdoor conditions.
• Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
• Work involves moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, hazardous material, flammable and toxic fumes (battery acids, cleaning solvents, gasoline, etc.).
• Rough terrain, poisonous plants, insects and animal bites, dirt, dust, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
• Frequently moves items weighing up to 10-25 pounds.
• Occasionally moves items weighing up to 50-100 pounds.
• Frequently communicates with others; must be able to exchange accurate information.
• Constantly moves about equipment, building, and vehicles.
• Constantly positions self to perform essential functions.
• Constantly operates tools and equipment.
