The City is seeking a skilled Equipment Operator II to perform advanced public works field operations, operate heavy equipment, maintain streets and infrastructure, and support fleet readiness through hands‑on maintenance and repair.

The Equipment Operator II is a journey-level position in the Public Works Department responsible for performing advanced equipment operation, street and road maintenance, utility infrastructure support, and related field work. Under general supervision, this position operates trucks and heavy equipment such as motor graders, excavators, loaders, skid steers, and plow trucks to support safe, effective, and responsive public works services.

The role also supports fleet and equipment readiness by diagnosing, troubleshooting, and performing preventative maintenance and routine repairs on City vehicles and equipment. The Equipment Operator II may serve as a lead in the field in the absence of a supervisor, coordinate crew activities, respond to emergency or weather‑related operational needs, and perform work safely around traffic, utilities, excavation areas, moving equipment, and changing environmental conditions.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is a dependable, safety‑focused public works professional with strong technical skills, sound judgment, and the ability to perform independently in field settings. This individual takes pride in maintaining streets, equipment, and infrastructure; communicates clearly with supervisors, coworkers, and the public; and remains calm and effective during emergencies, snow events, or other time‑sensitive operational needs.

  • Has hands‑on experience operating heavy equipment and trucks safely and efficiently.
  • Understands road maintenance, asphalt and concrete repair, drainage systems, and public works field practices.
  • Can troubleshoot vehicle and equipment issues, perform routine maintenance, and identify needed repairs.
  • Uses good judgement, situational awareness, and attention to detail when working around traffic, utilities, equipment, and changing weather conditions.
  • Works well as part of a crew and can provide guidance or support to less experienced staff when assigned.
  • Is flexible, service‑oriented, and willing to respond outside normal business hours when operational needs require it.
Minimum Qualifications

Education: High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience: Minimum of three (3) years of increasingly responsible experience in public works, construction, or equipment maintenance.

Equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be considered.

Certifications and Licensing Requirements: Valid driver license and satisfactory driving record.
