A leading county board is seeking a Heavy Equipment Operator in Sanford, Florida. The role involves operating various heavy machinery for road construction and maintenance, with a focus on safety and compliance with state regulations. Candidates must possess a high school diploma, a valid commercial driver's license, and one year of relevant experience. Work involves the operation of moderately complex equipment utilized in the maintenance and construction of roads and drainage facilities.

Operates heavy equipment including, but not limited to, dump trucks, steel wheel rollers, mixers, front end loaders, skid steer loaders, forklifts, backhoes, hydraulic boom mowers, graders, mini track excavators, and other equipment as assigned to complete road construction and maintenance projects.
Operates motor graders for grading and stabilizing roads and shoulders to maintain proper drainage and a smooth surface. Performs daily pre-trip inspections, preventive maintenance, and minor mechanical work on assigned equipment. Keeps records and submits reports on work performed. Observes and reports road deficiencies that cannot be corrected within assigned responsibilities to the supervisor. Answers routine questions from the public.
May also operate equipment such as Gradalls, track excavators, bulldozers, low boys, mowers, tractors, and others as necessary.
Additional Duties: Performs other related work as required and operates other equipment as assigned for road construction and maintenance. In emergencies, all employees are considered essential personnel and may be required to perform alternate duties.
Minimum qualifications include a High School Diploma or GED and 1 year of experience in road and drainage facilities maintenance and construction. A comparable amount of education, training, or experience may substitute for these minimums.
Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Commercial Drivers License Class "B" and have the ability to obtain a Class "A" within six months of employment. Also, must obtain within 6 months certification in "Work Zone Safety" from IMSA, Confined Space Entry Training, OSHA requirements, or other certifications as required.
Knowledge required includes effective operation and maintenance of heavy equipment, traffic and highway safety rules, and hazard prevention. Skills include understanding instructions, reading, writing, and record-keeping. Effective communication with the public is essential. Candidates must maintain equipment in good condition, sometimes under adverse weather conditions, and deal effectively with the public. Experience in heavy construction equipment operation or completion of an approved training program is required. Proficiency in word processing and related software is also necessary.
