About Us
The Solid Waste Division provides weekly curbside collection of household garbage, yard waste collection, and bulk waste collection.
What You Will Do
Performs responsible skilled work in the operation of one piece of equipment i.e., rear loader, boom truck in the Solid Waste Division; requires ability to cover multiple routes for solid waste collection of trash or yard waste materials.
Expected Hiring Range: $39,187.20 - $43,105.92 Starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications. A starting salary above the range listed may be considered for highly qualified individuals not to exceed the maximum of the grade.
Examples of Duties
Truck Operation & Waste Collection
- Yard Waste & Trash Collection: Drives trucks along prescribed routes to collect yard waste (vegetative) and junk/trash from curbside, ensuring timely and efficient pickups.
- Forklift Operation: Operates forklifts safely and efficiently to load and unload waste materials as part of the collection process.
- Bulk Junk Crew Participation: Works as part of a yard waste crew, garbage collection crew, or bulk junk crew, assisting with the collection of items placed curbside for disposal.
Equipment Maintenance & Safety:
- Routine Inspections & Maintenance: Conducts thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspections on trucks and equipment, performing routine preventative maintenance to ensure optimal performance.
- Equipment Cleaning & Care: Maintains and cleans equipment to ensure operational readiness and extend its lifespan.
- Safety First: Prioritizes safety by following proper procedures and guidelines to protect both self and co-workers while on the job.
Communication & Reporting:
- Customer Service: Answers inquiries from citizens about Solid Waste Division procedures and practices, offering helpful information.
- Mobile 311 Device Usage: Utilizes the Mobile 311 device to record locations for pickups and report areas with challenges or needs.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Landfill Assistance: Assists with dumping solid waste at the landfill as required, supporting waste management operations.
- Other Duties: Performs related tasks as needed, contributing to the overall success of the team and efficient waste management processes.
Qualifications
Equipment Operation & Maintenance Knowledge:
- Principles of Equipment Operation: Possesses a solid understanding of the principles and practices involved in operating and servicing a range of equipment, ensuring reliable performance.
- Skilled Maintenance Expertise: Applies general knowledge of various maintenance tasks, ensuring that equipment remains in top working condition and ready for use.
Safety & Regulatory Compliance:
- Traffic Laws & CDL Regulations: Demonstrates thorough knowledge of traffic laws and CDL regulations, ensuring safe and legal operation of Solid Waste equipment on the road.
- Safety Precautions & Hazard Awareness: Understands the occupational hazards related to equipment operation and adheres to all necessary safety precautions to minimize risk.
Work Ethic & Durability:
- Manual Labor Resilience: Proven ability to perform manual work for extended periods, even under adverse weather conditions, maintaining high standards of productivity and efficiency.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED equivalency, experience working outdoors
- Valid NC Driver’s license
Special Requirements:
- Class (A or B) CDL driver's license or the ability to obtain within six months of employment date. We will assist you with obtaining it if needed.

Physical Requirements And Working Conditions
- Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, feeling and repetitive motions.
- Employees must be able to perform heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- Be able to lift 50 pounds without assistance. Must possess visual acuity to operate a Solid Waste collection vehicle and collect garbage and refuse.
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
