Job summary

Sims Metal in Defiance, Ohio is seeking a material handler with heavy equipment experience to support unloading and loading operations and ensure safe, efficient scrap material handling. The role requires operation of grapple/magnet front-end loaders (>9 tons) and a forklift, with focus on safety and accuracy in unloading for transport.

Candidates should have 3–5 years of heavy equipment experience, a high school diploma or GED, and the ability to read and understand instructions in English;

Qualifications

• 3 to 5 years’ experience operating heavy equipment.
• High school diploma or GED preferred.
• Must pass pre-employment physical and drug screen.
• Ability to read and comprehend instructions, procedures, correspondence, and memos.
• Ability to speak and understand English.

Responsibilities

• Adhere to all SMM safety policies.
• Load and unload customer’s trucks/vehicles.
• Performs routine maintenance on loader such as lubricating, fueling, and cleaning.
• Completes inspection report prior to using equipment.
• Perform and maintain general housekeeping.
• Provides a safe environment for all employees, customers, and visitors.
• Other duties as assigned.

Job Summary

Operates material handler (grapple/magnet) and front-end loaders (>9 tons), and forklift to assist unloading customers and load trailers to prepare for transport of scrap materials. Inspects incoming material and grades accordingly.
