About the Position
We are seeking an experienced and dependable Equipment Operator/Forman to join our excavation crew. The ideal candidate will safely and efficiently operate heavy equipment used for excavation, grading, trenching, backfilling, and site preparation. We are looking for someone who is willing to be a hands on leader, can safely manage a crew, read plans, and keep projects moving forward while maintaining high-quality work.
Responsibilities
- Lead and supervise excavation crews on residential, commercial, and/or utility projects, coordinate manpower, equipment, and materials.
- Safely operate excavators, loaders, skid steers, dozers, and other heavy equipment as assigned.
- Perform excavation, trenching, grading, backfilling, and material loading according to project plans and specifications.
- Read and follow grade stakes, site plans, maintain proper grades, slopes, elevations, and trench dimensions.
- Perform daily equipment inspections, keep equipment clean and perform basic routine maintenance and report maintenance and/or safety concerns.
- Work safely around underground utilities, structures, personnel, and other equipment.
- Assist ground crew with layout, spotting, material handling, and general excavation duties. Willingness to perform physical labor, including but not limited to shoveling, lifting 50+ pounds repetitively, entering/exiting trenches safely.
- Follow company safety policies, and job-site procedures. Ensure all work is completed safely(including use of PPE), efficiently, and according to project specifications.
- Communicate effectively with the other crew members, project managers, superintendents, inspectors, and subcontractors.
- Monitor job progress and help keep projects on schedule, identify potential jobsite issues and resolve problems quickly.
Qualifications
- 3+ years of excavation or heavy civil construction experience, with foreman or lead experience preferred. Previous experience operating heavy equipment on excavation or construction crews mandatory.
- Ability to understand grades, elevations, slopes, and basic site plans.
- Valid driver's license required, CDL preferred.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Dependable, punctual, and willing to work as part of a team.
- Experience with utility excavation, underground utilities, site development, or mass excavation.
- Ability to operate multiple types of heavy equipment. Some using GPS machine-control equipment.
