Job summary

City of Providence is seeking an Equipment Operator for the 2nd shift (3:00 pm to 11:30 pm) in the Department of Public Works. The role involves operating and maintaining complex equipment, performing manual labor as needed, and responding to emergencies or winter weather events.

A CDL with airbrake endorsement is required, and the position is designated as Limited Union. The successful candidate will operate and maintain various equipment, conduct pre-trip inspections, log hours and materials,

Qualifications

• High school graduate or equivalent.
• Must possess and maintain a State Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with airbrake endorsement.
• Must be able to operate vehicles and equipment with manual transmissions and/or two speed differential.
• Working knowledge of the mechanics of gasoline and diesel motors and automotive equipment; skill in the operation, maintenance, and servicing of automotive and other equipment.
• Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
• Ability to perform arduous work with assigned equipment often under adverse conditions.
• Must be able to perform all essential functions of the job.

Responsibilities

• Operates a specified type or a variety of equipment for the purpose of the maintenance, construction, and development of public facilities, properties, structures, walkways, or roadways.
• Operates sander/snow plow during winter operations.
• Performs pre-trip inspections and operator level maintenance on assigned vehicles and equipment; makes minor operational and maintenance repairs and services equipment.
• Loads and unloads supplies and material.
• Maintains record of assignments, hours of operation, materials and supplies received and delivered, and other pertinent information relative to the equipment.
• When not engaged in Equipment Operator duties, performs general manual labor as directed.
