Job summary

Shapiro & Duncan, a third-generation family-owned provider of advanced mechanical solutions serving DC, Maryland, and Virginia since 1976, seeks a heavy equipment operator for construction projects. You will operate excavators, backhoes, and bobcats on job sites while upholding safety and workmanship.

Requirements include a high school diploma or GED and the ability to work Monday–Friday with occasional evenings and weekends.

Qualifications

• Must be able to operate heavy equipment on a construction site.
• High school diploma or GED required.
• Experience operating mini excavator, backhoe, bobcat preferred.
• Strongly preferred: plumbing, HVAC, or pipefitting experience.
• Must be able to perform calculations using load charts and basic math.

Responsibilities

• Operate heavy equipment (excavator, backhoe, bobcat) on construction sites.
• Perform basic vehicle inspections and routine maintenance.
• Ensure proper care of equipment and supplies and follow safety procedures.
• Support safety and environmental practices on site.

Reports to: Production Superintendent, Director of Field Operations

Requirements

• Able to work Monday-Friday with occasional evenings and weekends as needed. Must be able to be flexible with work schedule.
• High school diploma or GED.
• Experience in operating a variety of equipment, (mini excavator, backhoe, bobcat).
• Have the ability to do calculations on load charts using math skills such as the ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.
• STRONGLY PREFERRED: Prior plumbing, HVAC, pipefitting experience.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

• Ability to efficiently operate all heavy equipment on a construction Jobsite
• Knowledge of basic vehicle inspection and maintenance including tire pressure, checking oil and water levels.
• Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies.
• Promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
• Requires ability to lift, push or pull up to 75#.
• The work environment for this position frequently includes working near moving mechanical parts, in high or precarious places, in extreme outside weather conditions, with hazardous materials, with fumes or airborne particles, with the risk of electric shock, and in cramped or confined spaces.
• Ability to read, understand, and follow safety procedures.
• Able to do mechanical work (plumbing, HVAC, etc.) when operating work is slow.
• Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
