Job summary

City of Memphis seeks a skilled truck operator to transport and dump materials using tandem axle equipment. Responsibilities include equipment maintenance, traffic control duties, and handling loads at various sites across Memphis.

Applicants must hold a valid Class B CDL (Tennessee or out-of-state) and comply with DOT drug and alcohol testing rules. Familiarity with Memphis geography is preferred; driving experience in municipal settings is a plus.

Qualifications

• Ability to read, write and understand written and verbal instructions.
• Experience driving tandem axle equipment.
• Valid Class B Tennessee CDL or equivalent out-of-state; comply with DOT alcohol and drug testing.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine maintenance and pre-trip checks on equipment.

Salary Range: $45,371.82 - $45,371.82 Works under the supervision of an assigned supervisor. Operates various types of trucks including tandem axle equipped with dump body to transport and dump loose materials such as sand, crushed pavement, or vegetation debris if assigned. Operates barricade truck to reset inlet grates, manholes, and set up barricades in the right-of-way if assigned. May operate various equipment including Flushers in street cleaning operations and PB Loaders. Performs routine maintenance such as lubricating, fueling, and cleaning of equipment. Repairs and performs maintenance of drainage structures and road-side ditches. Loads and unloads materials, tools and equipment from trucks. Digs, spreads, and levels material or dirt using shovel. Uses air hammer to break out concrete. Uses chain saw and hand saw to remove trees from drainage ditches. Lifts, carries, and holds materials, tools, and supplies to various work sites. Assist with traffic control by providing manual directions such as operating arrow boards and traffic flow at specified locations if assigned.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Requires the ability to operate assigned equipment including dump truck, hand tools, power tools, pneumatic and hydraulic tools, and heavy construction tools including chain saw. Requires the ability to perform heavy manual work which will involve lifting manhole covers, inlet grates and rims, tools, concrete bags and materials, which can weigh up to 50 lbs. or up to 100 lbs. with assistance. Must be able to traverse various surfaces sometimes across ditches, climbing and crouching.

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS

Majority of the work is performed in an outdoor environment. May be exposed to insects, weeds, poisonous plants, bacteria, insecticides, pesticides, flooded areas, traffic, noise, heat and all types of weather conditions. May require some contact with the general public. Work may involve working inside culverts.

Qualifications

Ability to read, write and understand written and verbal instructions. Working experience driving tandem axle equipment required. Must possess and maintain a valid Class "B" Tennessee (or equivalent out-of-state) Commercial Driver's License and must comply with Federal Department of Transportation (DOT) Alcohol and Drug testing rules as a condition of continued employment. Knowledge of geographic area of Memphis preferred.
