Job summary

County of Dare is seeking a technician to diagnose, repair, and maintain a range of vehicles and heavy equipment under the supervision of the Fleet Maintenance Supervisor. The role covers preventive maintenance and motor repair, including gas and diesel engines.

Job description

Performs intermediate semiskilled work diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining vehicles and heavy equipment, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Fleet Maintenance Supervisor.

• Performs preventive maintenance and repair on a variety of vehicles and equipment including automobiles, tractors, heavy construction equipment and landscaping equipment.
• Performs motor repair and replacement work; performs repair work on both gas and diesel engines.
• Fabricates replacement parts and metal for repairs to vehicles and equipment.
• Maintains cleanliness of shop area, tools and equipment and exterior building perimeter.
• Performs inspections; maintains records of service and repairs.
• Repairs hydraulic systems on heavy duty equipment.
• Assists with storm cleanup.
• Performs other assigned duties.

• General knowledge of the methods, tools and equipment used in the repair and maintenance of automotive passenger cars, trucks, construction, and maintenance equipment.

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Three to five (3-5) years of experience in a related field or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
