Job summary

Centenary University is seeking a Horse Care Assistant to support the Equine Center's daily operations in Hackettstown, NJ. You will ensure the health and well-being of the horses, perform feeding, turnout, grooming, and basic medical tasks under barn management guidance.

Reporting to the Equine Operations Manager, you will supervise Equine Students and student workers, coordinate with farriers and vendors, and help maintain safe, clean facilities while meeting weekend and evening coverage

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Equine Studies or a related field.
• Prior experience working with and handling horses.
• Ability to lift and transport up to 50 pounds frequently.
• Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Have a professional relationship with the students and maintain clear boundaries.
• Full-time schedule is 40 hours per week including one weekend day.

Responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive daily horse care including feeding, watering, occasional stall cleaning, turnout, grooming, wrapping, blanketing, wound care, and first aid.
• Maintain the cleanliness of all barns and sheds on the property, organization of the tack rooms and storage areas, and cleanliness of turnout paddocks.
• Ensure the safety of all horses and students.
• Assist management with barn routine while contractors such as farriers, dentists, and facility upgrades are occurring.
• Maintain open communication with management on a daily basis.
• Direct supervision of Equine Students, and Student workers.
• Other duties, as assigned.
• Must be able to work at least one weekend day and one night check evening every other weekend.
