Job summary

Frost Valley YMCA seeks an experienced Equestrian Center Supervisor to oversee horses, operations, and facilities at Main Camp and East Valley Ranch. You will manage 20-90 horses seasonally, direct weekend rides, and support multiple horse programs while ensuring safety and high-quality guest experiences.

The role requires horse program leadership, barn management, and collaboration with camp staff, with on-site housing benefits offered.

Qualifications

  • Must be 21 years of age or older.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience in equestrian industry and barn management.
  • YMCA or camp setting experience preferred.
  • Equestrian certification and First Aid/CPR preferred.
  • Valid US driver’s license required.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills; able to lead a team.
  • Able to pass Frost Valley driver training.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee herd of 20-90 horses and daily care activities.
  • Manage weekend equestrian programming and on-call needs.
  • Coordinate with camp and program staff to support riders.
  • Hire and supervise seasonal barn staff and volunteers.

Description

This position works with the Equestrian Manager to oversee horses, operations, and facilities of the Equestrian Center at Main Camp and East Valley Ranch. The main focus is on maintaining and caring for a herd of 20-90 horses (varies by season), full equestrian facilities, and staffing for several equestrian programs. This position will directly oversee weekend trail rides and provide support for several programs such as overnight summer horse camps, horse day camps, and week day horse programs.

Requirements
  • Maintain and care for a herd of 20-90 horses throughout the year (varies seasonally), including feeding, farrier visits, veterinary care coordination, etc.
  • Determine appropriate categories for each horse based on temperament, training and physical condition i.e. staff use only, beginner friendly, retire, sell, etc.
  • Maintain accurate records on each horse such as health history, training and usage
  • Work in conjunction with the Associate Director of Community Programs & Equestrian related staff training, including documenting staff abilities, upholding safety standards, and modeling appropriate behavior with horses and guests
  • Join in regular care and upkeep of barn, pastures, fences, equipment and all related work to ensure equestrian center is clean, well-functioning and up to standard
  • Oversee weekend equestrian horse programming in spring and fall, including on-call responsibilities for urgent equestrian needs
  • Implement all CHA and ACA standards and best practices in the horse industry; update all program quality standards
  • Update and revise equestrian programming as necessary to serve guest needs and ensure high program retention
  • Assist in interviewing, hiring, training and ongoing supervision of two seasonal barn managers, summer seasonal equestrian staff, as well as help recruit and supervise per diem weekend staff
  • Coordinate with other departments regarding equestrian department needs i.e. maintenance, summer camp, programmatic departments
  • Work with school and weekend groups as needed
  • Demonstrate good judgment in decision-making
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Associate Director of Community Programs & Equestrian

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must be 21 years of age or older
  • Bachelor’s degree in related field preferred, or equivalent experience
  • Possess relevant experience in equestrian industry such as teaching, English or Western riding, managing a barn and/or overseeing equestrian staff
  • Background working in a YMCA or camp setting preferred
  • Hold equestrian certification from a nationally recognized equestrian organization, as well as First Aid/CPR certification (certifications can be earned upon hire at Frost Valley)
  • Excellent communication and organization skills, successful working under pressure, able to lead a team and work well with children, other staff, and families
  • Possess a valid US Driver’s License and be able to pass internal FV driver training
WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • Physically able to lift up to 50 lbs and walk up to 10 miles a day
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate

PAY RANGE: $16.50-$17.00 plus shared housing benefits
